Once in a Lifetime Moment in OKC

Once in a Lifetime Moment in OKC

For Christmas I bought my husband tickets to see Disturbed and Falling in Reverse in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. It’s been a few months since the concert and I think I’ve made a permanent residence on Cloud 9.

We are not crowd people or concert goers. Just your average 30 year olds who enjoy to have fun as long as we can be in bed by 10 (pushing it). But we had the BEST time at Paycom Center!

To be completely honest, we were really there to see Falling in Reverse. My husband has been a fan of Ronnie Radke’s style and vocals since he was in Escape the Fate, and has watched every music video including the reaction videos from first time listeners to Falling in Reverse. Just a slight obsession.

Our Stay

Oklahoma City is only 4.5 hours from where we live, so we left after work which ended up being a downpour late at night on a highway full of semi’s. We got in late to the hotel, Hyatt Place Oklahoma City Downtown/Bricktown, and the hostess let us know that they were upgrading our room to the top floor since there were complaints of dogs barking on the floor we were supposed to be on. First win! We have dogs of our own, one who likes to hear himself talk as well, so we didn’t have an issue with having dogs on the floor but it was a pleasant surprise to be offered a better room.

We stayed in the Bricktown portion of OKC which is a great spot for tourists with an exciting nightlife. There are tons of places to eat, drink, and tons of things to do. Events of all sorts are held in the area from OKC Thunder basketball games at Paycom Center, MMA fights, baseball games to a beautiful botanical garden tour and even a water taxi that gives you a tour of the area. I wanted to ride the water taxi, however, with it being January, the water taxi was closed.

Concert Day

The morning of the concert, we decided to get up for breakfast at the hotel, and get our day started. Since we weren’t familiar with the area we decided to walk around and find a route to Paycom Center as the hotel was on the completely opposite side of Bricktown. It was nice to see Bricktown during the day. There were several green spaces, especially along the water taxi route, where we stopped to take some pictures.

The weather wasn’t particularly great with an overcast and light mist, but it was still nice to stretch our legs. We took our time walking around with the thought that we would be walking among crowds and so there would be delays. (Also, I’d be wearing heels and would be much slower. HA!) On the way back, we decided to grab a beer and a light lunch. We found a casual local place that had such a fun vibe! I’m a sucker for appetizers and sweets, and my husbands a sucker for unusual beers! We got an elote chicken dip and BIG brownie sundae to split. And
OHMYLAWD!!! That. was. good!!! David did get a food item as well but I was so enthused by apps’ and ‘sserts that I don’t remember what he got. In Little Rock, AR, we have a local brewery that has a beautifully crafted blueberry beer. So David could not wait to try the OKC version of the blueberry beer. He also tried a Ginger-Cranberry beer from their winter collection! Both beers had a great flavor and we can’t wait to see what else they come up with. We had such an unforgettable experience here that we’ve decided to make this a go-to when we are in-town!

I, unfortunately, will NOT be giving the name of the establishment. Why?? Because as we were sitting at our table, there was a party sat next to us. When they sat down, David and I looked at each other and thought, “those guys must be here for the concert too”. They had the “Disturbed/Falling in Reverse” vibe going on and were roughly our age. One of their friends showed up, and had a very particular tattoo that I thought looked familiar. I mentioned it to David and that’s when it hit us…IT WAS FALLING IN REVERSE!!!!!!!! 4 of the 5 band members were there grabbing a bite to eat. I was shaking with adrenaline, gitty, excitement, and pure fangirling! It took everything in me not to hug each and everyone of them. I finally could not help myself and leaned over to tell them that I was sorry to interrupt their meal, but we are so *freaking* excited to see them that night. Y’all…they were so incredibly nice!!! *happy crying* They introduced themselves, shook our hands,
and we had a small conversation with them. We didn’t want to be any more intrusive or disrespectful, but we really do wish we got an autograph or a photo with them. Meeting them was one of the most incredible experiences we ever had, and really made the concert that much more special. The rest of the night, my husband would tell anyone we passed that we met Falling in Reverse. LOL!! I’m just really glad I had my lashes on, or I’d be looking like a naked mole rat.

After such a memory-making lunch, we left to go rest before meeting our friend for dinner. She lives in OKC and we hadn’t seen her in quite
some time, and wanted to at least have dinner while we were in town. We met upnfor some of the best tacos in OKC at Rev
Mex
! We were still pretty full and hyped up from our earlier outing, that I just did some sides as a meal: the elotes and cilantro rice. Apparently I was done having all of the elotes themed things that I had to have more! De-lish-ous! My husband is not a fan cilantro or cumin, so mexican food is not entirely his jam (weirdo!). So he had a quesadilla, and said it was one of the better ones he’s had. We had a great time visiting with our friend and cannot wait for the next time we see her!

The Epic Concert

When we got back to the hotel, we took our time getting ready. Maybe a little too long because we were late leaving the hotel. EEk! I may have brought the wrong kind of heels…ok, they may have been my “hooker” heels which made it difficult to walk .8 miles to the Paycom Center… We tried to catch the light rail right down the road from our hotel, but when we hopped on, the driver went on break and wouldn’t be back for quite some time. So, we just had to keep walking. It was slow going but we did not want to take the chance of getting there too late. We laughed because right as we go in front of the Paycom Center, the DAGGUM LIGHT RAIL SHOWS UP!

We got inside, grabbed some beer and water (responsible), and made our way to the seats. I was so thrilled with the seats! They were right in the middle of the section, eye level with the stage so we didn’t have to turn our heads, and they were aisle seats. We did have to get up a thousand times as people were coming and going to their seats, but I would do it again.

The concert was PHENOMINAL! Plush, an all girl rock band, crushed the stage! Definitely added them to my Spotify playlist. Of course, we were enamored with Falling in Reverse! They were the ones we were really only planning on seeing, but decided to stay for a bit of Disturbed and we are glad we did! During the show, both bands took a break with the crowd, doing some crowd work, talking to fans who had posters, and just took a group breathing break. Both bands are pretty mindful about mental health and we loved their messages throughout the night. It was purely a magical night rocking out and enjoying live music!

We didn’t want the night to be over, but the concert had to end at some point. We made our way out and decided to actually wait for the light rail. My feet were killing me too much to make it all the way back to the hotel. The light rail went around the rest of Bricktown that we did not see and we got ideas for our breakfast in the morning.

The Next Morning

The next morning, I wanted to get a picture in front of a specific poster announcing the concert. Unfortunately, I could not find the poster so we decided to go ahead and grab breakfast. There was a hotel next to Paycom Center that had a restaurant inside and we decided to try it out. (Wasn’t trying to get one last glimpse of Falling in Reverse or Disturbed, pfft….) Anyway, the Omni Oklahoma City Hotel was STUNNING! They have several restaurants inside ranging from all styles, and we chose to eat at Seltzers. David got very fluffy biscuits and gravy, and got banana and nutella toast. Honestly, it sounds basic, but they ‘jeujed’ it up to make it fancy.

Alas, we did not want to leave our wonderful short weekend in Oklahoma City, OK, but we needed to get back to reality. We had a core memory making time and can’t wait for the next time we are here.

On to the next adventure!
